ROCKINGHAM — With fall weather rapidly approaching, a new shelter for homeless men in Richmond County moved closer to completion this month thanks to a contribution from AT&T to Place of Grace Rescue Mission.

John Lyon, AT&T regional director for external affairs, was joined recently by state Sen. Tom McInnis, R-Richmond, in presenting the $1,000 donation to the Rev. Gary Richardson, executive director of the mission and pastor of New Life Church.

“The Place of Grace Rescue Mission is a tremendous example of how lives are changed when a community comes together to tackle the problem of homelessness and to support those who desperately need help,” McInnis said. “Whether providing a hot meal, a dry bed or perhaps just a smile, all those involved in this program are indeed giving hope for the future to folks who need it the most.”

The contribution will be used to help build the new men’s facility. The new shelter will be a 2,400 square foot building located on New Life Church’s 25-acre tract and will accommodate up to 16 residents. Currently, residents are participating in Richmond Community College educational programs, which will continue to be provided in the church building.

“Place of Grace Rescue Mission is committed to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of homeless men, women and families,” Richardson said. “Of these, we begin with addressing physical needs, for when someone is cold or hungry today, it is very difficult to think about tomorrow. We appreciate the encouragement and support of Senator McInnis as we work to develop a sustainable response to homelessness in our county.”

Lyon said AT&T believes in supporting programs that make a difference for communities and families.

“While delivering advance technology and services is certainly part of our commitment to help our communities prosper, we also understand there is no better way to build communities than by helping make a lasting difference in individuals’ lives,” he said. ”We appreciate the opportunity to support Place of Grace.”
