Jon Lyerly of Rockingham and Bradley Harrison of Florence, S.C. won first place in the TLC Guide Service Annual May Catfish Tournament reeling in a 61.4 pound catfish earning $1,825, and $3,525 total.
ROCKINGHAM — The TLC Guide Service Annual May Catfish Tournament had a record turnout over the weekend, with its largest amount of boats on the water at 38 and the largest total payout to the winners in the event’s history.
The anglers were in the water by 7 p.m. and fished all through the night starting from three main launching points along the Pee Dee River. It was a slow bite, according to event organizer Kevin Lambert, who said only 23 of the 38 boats weighed in a fish. But it was close — the top three finishers were separated by only 3.2 pounds, and first and second place were only separated by 0.8 pounds.
The results were as follows:
• 1st place — Team Flying Sturgeon, made up of Jon Lyerly and Bradley Harrison who reeled in a 61.4 pound catfish earning $1,825. They had the “big fish” of the tournament, with 34.4 pounds earning $760 from the big fish pot and $740 side pot, plus a $200 donation from Team Stink, for a total payout of $3,525, the largest ever for the tournament.
