Mr. George Henry “Moon” Mullen, Jr., 82, of 519 McDonald Avenue, Hamlet died Thursday, March 8, 2012 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. He was born March 22, 1929 in Hamlet, a son of the late George Henry Mullen and Gussie Blythe Mullen.
Mr. Mullen was a graduate of Hamlet High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Guam during World War II. He started his working career with Southern Bell as an executive for the Yellow Pages, then became the Residential Business Manager for Central North Carolina and retired as the Business Office Manager for the state of North Carolina. Mr. Mullen was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 7314. He was a member of the Birmingham Drug Coffee Club and enjoyed spending time at Oak Island.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet. Memorial services will be conducted at a later time.
Mr. Mullen is survived by his wife, Marjorie Bradley Mullen of the home; two sons, George “Buddy” Mullen, III and wife Frances and John B. Mullen and wife Tracy, all of Hamlet; grandchildren, Meagan Mullen, Morgan Mullen, George “Cody” Mullen, IV , April Gillenwater and husband George, John B. Mullen, Jr., and Karen Mullen; great grandchildren, Bella Gillenwater and Cayden Gillenwater. Mr. Mullen was preceded in death by two sisters, Miriam Mullen Taylor of Hamlet and Helen Mullen Otterbourg of Charlotte.
