ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County could be in store for snowflakes and slush as a winter storm sweeps over the state this week.
The National Weather Service’s Raleigh forecast office issued a hazardous weather outlook for Richmond, Anson, Scotland, Moore and surrounding counties at 5:16 a.m. Wednesday.
A dusting of snow is predicted for central North Carolina on Wednesday night. The Sandhills could see a few flurries, but the greatest chance of snow for Richmond County will be Thursday through Saturday as a low-pressure system passes through.
“Confidence is growing that a winter storm will impact central North Carolina late Thursday through Saturday,” the hazardous weather outlook states. “While a winter storm appears probable, significant uncertainty remains regarding timing, precipitation type, amounts and possible impacts.”
As of 8:30 a.m., National Weather Service forecasts called for a 20 percent chance of snow in Rockingham Wednesday evening and overnight.
Any white stuff that sticks will melt Thursday, as meteorologists predict a daytime high of 46 degrees under partly sunny skies. The storm is expected to begin moving through Thursday night, with rain, snow and a wintry mix forecast for Rockingham.
Early predictions call for a 100 percent chance of rain on Friday with a high of 39, but snow could be in the mix as the storm approaches and forecasts are revised. There is a 40 percent chance of rain and snow on Saturday.
