MURPHY, N.C. (AP) — A mountain school district is considering closing an elementary school to deal with limited resources and enrollment declines.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/2ptIPfH ) that Cherokee County schools Superintendent Jeana Conley gave the local school board a feasibility study on Marble Elementary. A public hearing will be held on May 16 on the school that has 104 students.

The district’s enrollment has dropped by several hundred students since 2008, and it has also lost 65 employees since 2009. Conley said a state adjustment to the district’s teacher allotment caused it to lose two more state-funded teaching positions in December.

The students and staff could be moved to nearby schools.

Haywood County closed a school recently, and Yancey County is planning to consolidate three aging schools into one new one.
