Tournament raises funds for school supplies

HAMLET — A three-on-three basketball tournament at Second Baptist Church this weekend collected $200 more for Impact Backpack, a program designed to gather school supplies and nonperishable food for neighboring families in need.

Twenty-something church members Justus Ellerbe and Brett Bowers created the program, which youth pastor Drew Stables said Monday had generated $2,000, as well as backpacks and in-kind donations. “Nine or 10” teams played in the tournament Saturday, Stables said.

“It’s taken off,” he said. “It’s kind of exploded.”

Ellerbe and Bowers have selected three schools to assist because their students are church neighbors: Hamlet Middle School, and Monroe Avenue and Fairview Heights elementaries.

Those seeking information on the project may check Justus Ellerbe’s or Brett Bowers’s Facebook page and search for “Impact Backpack Drive.”
