To the editor:

I really enjoyed reading the story about “Miss Mamie” Monroe (“Roberdell’s ‘Miss Mamie’ honored at Wingate,” April 18). I attended Roberdell School for the first and second grades. Miss Mamie Monroe was my first-grade teacher.

She was a very helpful teacher. When I started school, the county had no school buses; a school would be built for each community. The schools I remember are Pee Dee, Cordova, Rohanen and Roberdell.

The students had to walk at the most 3 miles to school. At that time, we lived 2½ miles from Cordova School. In the winter of 1926, it was so cold and rainy my mother would not send me to school. My grandmother lived in Roberdell, so I moved in with her and I got to attend Roberdell School.

My Aunt Sarah and I walked to school together. When I reached the third grade, the county had bought school buses, so I went back home to live. My Aunt Sarah lived to be 100 years old.

I really appreciate Dr. McGee honoring Miss Mamie Monroe the way he did.
