ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a man they say was involved in a hit-and-run incident earlier this week that sent a teenage girl to the hospital.

Chief Billy Kelly said Wednesday that investigators had nailed down a description of the suspect vehicle and that description was handed out to the night shift officers.

One officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description in the Food King parking lot later that evening and noticed there was body damage, Kelly said. After investigating further, the officer determined that it was the vehicle and driver they were looking for.

Marcus Anthony Jenkins, 23, was arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run inflicting serious injury. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail around 8:30 p.m. under a $25,000 secured bond.

Jenkins, of Rose Street in Hamlet, is accused of hitting a 13-year-old girl just after midnight Tuesday morning as she was crossing South Long Drive between Cauthen Drive and Scaleybark Road. Instead of stopping, police say he kept driving toward Mill Road.

She was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to another where she was listed in stable but serious condition late Tuesday afternoon.

Kelly said Wednesday that there had been no change in her condition.

“We hope she pulls through with a full recovery of her injuries,” he said, adding that police would be checking up periodically for updates on her condition.

The chief said the incident is not believed to be intentional.

According to the arrest report, Jenkins has a court date scheduled for July 28.

Online records with the N.C. Court System and the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Jenkins has no other pending charges or past criminal convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
