Man charged with 471 sex crimes



ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing more than 400 sex crime charges for activity spanning more than 20 years.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s office, 32-year-old Robert Lewis Bishop, of McDowell Lane in Rockingham, was charged for “taking inappropriate sexual misconduct” with three victims from 1994 until this year.

Bishop was arrested Friday and charged with 156 counts each of first-degree sexual offense and committing a crime against nature, as well as 159 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $750,000 secured bond.

First-degree sexual offense is a Class B1 felony, with each charge carrying a 23-year sentence. Taking indecent liberties with a child is a Class F felony and crime against nature is a Class I felony.

Bishop has no prior convictions in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
