LAURINBURG — The fourth-seeded St. Andrews Knights men’s soccer team (10-5-2) shut out the No. 5 Truett McConnell Bears (9-3-4) by a final of 4-0 in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament Friday afternoon.
Left wing Francisco Goncalves scored the Knights’ first goal, assisted by midfielder Nicolo Ligi, in the 20th minute; midfielder Matteo Sala put in the next goal, assisted by forward Leo Egerer, in the 54th minute; defender Pablo Diezhandino made it a 3-0 St. Andrews lead with a goal that was assisted by midfielder Tobias Crosariol in the 58th minute; and forward Zach Trimming scored the final goal, assisted by center back Alessandro Conte, with just over three minutes to go.
St. Andrews goalkeeper Cristobal Romero made four saves in the contest.
The Knights move on to the second round and will play at top-seeded Milligan in Tennessee on Tuesday. Milligan defeated No. 8 Reinhardt 1-0 in double overtime in the first round.
St. Andrews men’s basketball bludgeons Regent
The St. Andrews Knights won 91-63 over the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Regent Royals in Virginia Beach, Va. on Friday.
Guard Xzavier McFadden led the Knights in scoring with 22 points. Guard Seth Smith had 14 points and three rebounds; and forward Quwan Barnes had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Regent guard Kristofer Norman had a team-high 13 points; forward Joakim Marie-Joseph had nine points and nine rebounds; and guard Darrin Clark had nine points.
St. Andrews (2-0) shot 36 of 74 (48.6%) from the floor, went 6 of 18 (33.3%) on 3s, and was 15 of 30 (50%) from the free throw line. Regent (0-1) was 21 of 64 (30.5%) from the field, 5 of 18 (36%) from downtown, and 14 of 28 (50%) from the line.
St. Andrews forced 30 turnovers and had 34 points off of them. The Knights led 39-30 at halftime.
The Knights plays again on Monday when they head to the NCAA Division I’s High Point.
