ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond baseball team was looking to bounce back from a loss at Charlotte Christian, move a step closer to winning the conference title outright and celebrate its seniors in style when it hosted rival Scotland on Tuesday.

But a rough night at the plate spoiled all of those plans.

The Raiders (15-5, 11-2 Sandhills Athletic Conference) only racked up one hit, a Tyler Bass single to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and went five straight innings without putting a runner on base as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Scots.

It was a pitching showdown between Richmond’s Hunter Parris and Scotland’s Michael Johnson.

Parris was on pace for a no-hitter through the first five innings, earning four strikeouts and retiring the Scots in order four times in that span. Johnson had only given up one hit and struck out four Richmond batters through five.

All that changed, in favor of Scotland, when Tyler Barfield led off the top of the sixth with a single, made it second base on a groundout and then got to the corner on a through ball. Mike Sellers would bring Barfield home and break the scoreless tie with an RBI single — which ended up being the game-winning hit and run — moments later.

Richmond had a chance to pull off the comeback in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t capitalize after Brett Young finally broke the on-base drought with a lead-off walk and Jake Ransom followed by getting to first base on an error. Cam Carraway and Garet Weigman both got to first on a fielder’s choice and then Garret Richardson grounded out to end the game.

Bass, Carraway, Parris, Ransom, Richardson, Weigman, Young, Nolan Allen, Alex Anderson, Evan Hudson, Cy Jones and Logan Moore are the 12 who were recognized during a pre-game Senior Night ceremony on Tuesday.

“It’s a really special group of guys to me. They have worked really hard to make this year a success,” head coach Ricky Young said. “They have great chemistry and they have made it fun coming to the field every day.”

The Raiders will look to close out SAC play with a win when they visit Scotland for a rematch on Thursday.
