Devon Hunt, a former standout for the Richmond football team, was named to the 2018 All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Preseason Football Team at the CIAA Football Media Day Luncheon on Wednesday.
It was the second year in a row that he received the early honor.
Hunt, a rising junior at Shaw University, finished last season with a team-high 90 total tackles (59 solo, 31 assists). He also recorded 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two pass breakups in the 10 games played.
For his performance, Hunt was selected First Team All-CIAA.
As a freshman, the Rockingham native racked up 89 tackles — which led all freshman in the conference — and four sacks. Hunt also earned Rookie of the Week on two separate occassions and was then dubbed CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year at the end of the 2016 season. He was also named to the conference’s second team as a freshman.
“I just go out there and do what I came to do — which is play football. Yeah, I’m making a lot of tackles but I feel like I’m just another piece to the puzzle,” Hunt said in 2016. “(I’m) just helping them, so they have more breaks and won’t have to be all over the field.”
Hunt was one of two Shaw players named to the CIAA Preseason Team on Wednesday, the other being rising sophomore defensive back Jaleel Scroggins — the Bears’ second leading tackler (70 total tackles) last season. Scroggins had 13.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two sacks and two interceptions as a freshman and was named to both the All-Rookie and All-CIAA First Teams.
Shaw, which finished the 2017 season with a 3-7 overall record, is projected to finish eighth out of the 12 teams in the conference. Bowie State University and Virginia State University took the top two spots, respectively, in the preseason polls.
