Athlete of the Week (Dec. 4-9): Lexyonna Ingram

ROCKINGHAM — Lexyonna Ingram has been named the Daily Journal’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Monday, Dec. 4.

Ingram is a senior forward for the Richmond girls basketball team who averaged 13.3 points in the Lady Raiders’ three games last week. She scored 11 points in a 59-39 win over Purnell Swett last Tuesday, a team-high 18 points at Clayton the following day, and then poured in another 11 points on Friday against Pinecrest.

“I’ve just been trying to put up more points, get rebounds and work on my defense to help the team win more,” Ingram said. “Because losing isn’t fun.”

With this season being Ingram’s first on the varsity team, she has made it her mission to leave an impact on the game every time she steps onto the floor. The senior’s length allows her to grab numerous offensive rebounds and swat away opposing players’ shots on defense.

Her 40 points in Richmond’s first four games are among the team’s top two scoring totals.

“It makes me happy to know that I can help the team,” Ingram added.

When the Lady Raiders shots aren’t falling from the outside, head coach Rosalind McDonald said Ingram has “done a good job” of being that much-needed presence down low. And she hopes that continues as the season progresses.

“She’s really stepped up on the inside for us,” McDonald said. “The expectation has always been there for to step up because she’s a senior. Her play has been really important.”

Below are Ingram’s answers to three of the questions presented by the Daily Journal:
