ROCKINGHAM — Richmond had a conference-high 11 players make the 2017 All-Sandhills Athletic Conference football team that was officially announced late Saturday night.

Freshman quarterback Caleb Hood, senior running back Dante Miller and junior wide receiver Malik Stanback highlighted the all-conference selections from the Raiders’ offensive unit, which averaged 35.3 points per contest — and scored at least 40 points in six games — this past season.

Hood threw for 2,095 yards and 16 touchdowns in his debut season, Miller racked up 1,327 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground in his final campaign, and Stanback burst on the scene with a team-leading 35 receptions and 751 receiving yards.

Offensive linemen Daryn Mason and Jake Ransom — also selected to the All-SAC squad — were members of the upfront crew who made it possible for Hood, Miller and Stanback to gain those positive yards. Ransom and Miller were the only two Raiders who had been named all-conference prior to this season.

Senior Gordon Pihl, who caught a 12-yard touchdown pass against Scotland, was the SAC’s lone tight end to make the team.

On the defensive side of the ball, head coach Bryan Till — also Richmond’s defensive coordinator — had three players named all-conference for the first time in their careers, and each one was from a different position group: Delon Wall from the defensive line, Jaquan Everett from the linebacking core and Tony McRae from the secondary.

Wall led the team in tackles, sacks and was able to recover a fumble for a score against North Mecklenburg in the first round of the state playoffs. Everett was second in tackles and finished with the most interceptions (3) on the season. McRae consistently performed as the team’s No. 1 cornerback and ended the year with a team-high nine passes defended to go along with four tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

Kaleb Douglas and Victor Lucero, both seniors, were selected to the SAC’s all-conference squad for their contributions on special teams. Douglas finished with the year with a total of 603 return yards (490 kick return, 113 punt return) and three touchdowns (two kick return, one punt return). Lucero made 45 of his 47 point-after attempts and was 2-5 on field goals.

Five Raiders were named All-SAC honorable mention: senior WR Jaleen Baldwin, senior OL Steven Blyther, senior OL Chase Coulthard, junior LB John Jones and senior WR Da’Shaun Wallace.

Scotland, who just wrapped up its season with a 30-22 loss to Harding in the 4A State Championship game Saturday night, landed a second-best 10 players on the All-SAC team. Senior running back Zamir White was named Offensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Chris Williams was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Richard Bailey earned his seventh consecutive Coach of the Year Award — thanks to seven straight conference titles.
