Hunt named All-CIAA

RALEIGH — Devon Hunt was named First-Team All-CIAA for the second straight year.

The former Richmond standout led the Shaw University football team with 90 total tackles (59 solo, 31 assists) in his sophomore campaign. He would also register 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two pass breakups this past season.

Hunt was named CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.

Also grabbing All-CIAA honors were former Raiders Jaelin Beugre (Fayetteville State) and Daryus Skinner (Winston-Salem), who were both named Second-Team All-Conference. Beugre recorded 47 tackles, two interceptions and returned a fumble for a touchdown, while Skinner tallied 44 tackles, three interceptions and three tackles for loss.

Temple splits opener

PAGELAND, S.C. — Temple Christian’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams opened their seasons on the road Friday evening. Both teams made the trip to South Pointe Christian, but only one was able to come out with a victory.

Senior guard Mary Smith led the girls to a 53-22 win with her game-high 24 points and nine rebounds on the night. Her sisters, Anna and Rachel, chipped in 12 and nine points, respectively, while senior forward Lydia Bond pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers returned all starters from last year’s squad that finished 18-2 overall and won the conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. Friday’s win was their 15th in a row — dating back to last season.

Temple’s boys didn’t fair too well in a 75-51 loss but junior center Josh Greene had a stellar performance, scoring 23 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Forward Dylon Goodwin added four points and 10 boards.

Temple will travel to Shining Light Baptist Academy for a couple of non-conference games Tuesday evening.
