Griffin, Wimpey earn top SAC honors

ROCKINGHAM — Similar to the way they handled their schedule this season, the Lady Raiders dominated the 2017 Sandhills Athletic Conference awards that were recently announced.

Richmond had five players named to the All-Conference team, and saw both senior outside hitter Altman Griffin and head coach Shellie Wimpey take home the top two individual honors, for the second consecutive year.

Griffin was joined by teammates Brianna Baysek (senior middle hitter), Owen Bowers (senior middle hitter), junior Savannah Lampley (junior outside hitter) and Mackenzie Webb (senior setter) on the All-SAC squad.

All five Lady Raiders were integral parts in helping the team go undefeated in the regular season, set the school record for most wins in a season, win the conference regular-season and tournament championships and earn a No. 2 seed in the NCHSAA State Playoffs.

Their talents were on full display in Richmond’s final game of the season, a second-round match versus Lake Norman, earlier this week.

Baysek had a solid all-around game with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Bowers registered 11 kills and two digs. Lampley finished with five kills and 23 digs. Webb tallied 42 asssits, 13 digs, two blocks and two kills. Griffin recorded 24 digs and 22 kills — both team-highs — to go along with her two blocks.

Jack Britt, Pinecrest and Scotland all had four of players make the team and three were selected from Hoke County, while Lumberton, Purnell Swett and Seventy-First each had one player named all-conference.
