ROCKINGHAM — Victor Lucero has been named the Daily Journal’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Monday, Oct. 16.

Lucero is a senior midfielder for the Richmond boys soccer team who recorded a total of five goals in the team’s final two games of the regular season, scoring the opening goal in the Raiders’ 4-2 win at Seventy-First last Monday, and then finishing with four goals in a 8-3 victory over Scotland last Wednesday — which was also Senior Night.

He’s also a kicker for the football team and converted all seven of his extra-point attempts in a 49-27 win over Lumberton in this past Friday’s Homecoming game.

“He just kind of showed out on Senior Night. It seemed like everything he touched on that particular night went in the back of the net,” head boys soccer coach Bennie Howard said. “Victor’s a very good, very skilled player.”

Lucero, who was named First-Team All-Conference last year, has netted 15 goals and recorded three assists in 19 games this season. His 15 goals are the most on the team, while the three helpers are third-best behind senior striker Jonathan Tadlock (4) and junior midfielder Carlos Alcocer (5).

His 33 points, two game-winning goals and one penalty kick also sit at the top of the Raiders’ statistical categories.

“That’s something we’ve looked for throughout the season, for him to be consistent and put goals (in the net) for us,” Howard said. “When we need a goal, we look for him and Carlos.”

Lucero and the boys soccer team were scheduled to play at Hoke County in the first round of the conference tournament on Monday, but the game was postponed due to weather. They will make the trip Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. start.

“These last two games, Victor has been hot. And I hope that continues against Hoke,” Howard added.
