ROCKINGHAM — For the sixth consecutive season, the Rockingham Middle School volleyball team has been crowned champions of the Southeastern Conference.
The Lady Rockets took down Anson-Blue (25-10, 25-19, 25-16) on Monday, behind 23 points from Allyiah Swiney, and finished their season with an 11-1 overall record — their only loss came at the hands of Anson late last month.
“I am so proud of this group of young ladies. They played their best game today when it counted the most,” head coach Teresa Mason said. “Throughout the season, I knew we had the ability to be champions, but we didn’t always play like it. Today, when everything was on the line, they played their hearts out and left it all on the court.”
Edriana Davis recorded a second-best 16 points in the win, while Madison Jenkins and Kenleigh Frye chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, and Catherine Dennis added eight. Allie Rodgers (2), Miccah Wall (2) and Joy Styles (1) combined to score five points.
Rockingham defeated Carver in the first round of the playoffs last week in order to advance to Monday’s title game.
“I think the strength of our program comes from recognizing that each year brings a totally new set of athletes with different skill levels. I always tell my players that I like to win, but that’s not my main focus,” Mason added. “I want to do what I can to prepare them to play at the next level. Therefore, I’m always looking for ways to better myself as a coach so that I can help them improve as players.”
