ROCKINGHAM — Caleb Hood has been named the Daily Journal’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Monday, Sept. 18.
Hood is a freshman quarterback for the Richmond football team who threw for 223 yards and a touchdown in the Raiders’ 56-34 victory over Purnell Swett last Friday. He also had eight carries for 31 yards and two scores — marking the second time this season he scored three touchdowns in a game.
“His decision making on Friday night was incredible. He’s carrying out fakes better, making some critical third-down throws, and he chose to keep the ball twice down at the goal line — which ended up being scores,” head football coach Bryan Till said. “Those were some really impressive plays, especially for a young kid to make.”
Hood says his favorite subject in school is math, but he plans on majoring in communications when he gets to college. If he’s not able to fulfull his dream of becoming an NFL quarterback, he wants to be an ESPN broadcaster.
The freshman, who’s racked up 840 total yards of offense and nine touchdowns in five games, will be looking to continue his impressive debut season when Richmond hosts Pinecrest this Friday, Sept. 29, in its second conference game of the season.
Below are Hood’s answers to five of the questions presented by the Daily Journal:
Q: Who’s your favorite athlete? Why?
A: Deshuan Watson (QB, Houston Texans) because I like his leadership, and he’s humble and composed.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do outside of sports?
A: I like to go to Myrtle Beach. I go there almost every summer. It’s just a real peaceful place.
Q: If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
A: Super strength, so I could truck people and score a lot of touchdowns.
Q: What would be your first purchase if you won the lottery?
A: A golden Lamborghini
Q: Who’s your biggest influence?
A: Deshaun Watson, again, because he came from a small place in Georgia and he started as a freshman in high school, too. Also, his mom had tongue cancer so he had to go through that and help pay bills…I just look up to him because of that.
