The Richmond volleyball and junior varsity football teams defeated their respective opponents Thursday evening.

The Lady Raiders (8-0, 3-0 SAC) made the trip to Jack Britt and came away with a 4-0 victory (25-13, 23-25, 25-12, 25-18) over their new conference foe, remaining undefeated on the season.

Coach Shellie Wimpey said sophomore Alexis Swiney and junior Savannah Lampley “did great covering tips and getting balls up,” while sophomore Layne Maultsby “made adjustments and had much better passes.”

She also praised the team’s senior core and its ability to score points and record blocks when needed.

“We came out with intensity in the first set, playing hard and moving well,” Wimpey said. “The second set, we looked like we were stuck. We didn’t move and we didn’t adjust to their more intense gameplay.”

“We picked it back up the third and fourth games by finding holes and passing well so we could set up hits,” she added.

The JV team (2-0) crushed Pine Forest 34-6 in its first home game of the year.

After freshman C.J. Tillman returned a punt for a touchdown in the first quarter, the Raiders never looked back as they scored all 34 points in the first half. They were able to hold the Trojans scoreless in the first 24 minutes of game play, but gave up a passing touchdown in the second half — with 9:12 left on the clock.

Thursday’s victory came a week after Richmond slipped past Wake Forest 24-23 in overtime on the road. It held a one-touchdown lead over the Cougars in the fourth quarter but was forced into an extra period after the home team scored late.

The Raiders got the ball first in overtime and found the end zone — and converted on the extra-point attempt — soon therafter. Wake Forest was able to score on the ensuing possesion, but the Raider defense blocked the PAT in order to seal the win.

Next week, Richmond volleyball travels to Hoke County on Tuesday (6 p.m.), plays at Union Pines on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) and hosts Lumberton on Thursday (6 p.m.). The junior varsity football squad is set to play at Butler next Thursday (6 p.m.).
