School records fall as UNCP men 3rd, women 7th at CC track championship

MYRTLE BEACH — UNC Pembroke posted a new school record for the third-straight day, while also establishing a new meet record to highlight final-day action Saturday at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships.

Ben Oxendine broke the men’s javelin throw record with a mark of 55.40 meters, breaking Matt Thompson’s record that was set in 2014. Sofia Skidmore crossed in 4:40.22 to take champion honors in the women’s 1500-meter run and set the new meet record mark.

The men’s squad tallied 102 points to take third place, while the women’s team posted 40 points to finish seventh.

On the women’s side, Skidmore also brought home a runner-up finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:18.14, while Janaya Davis-Gainer finished fifth in the 100-meters at 11.90.

On the men’s side, Adam Rogers won the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.47 meters, while the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Calen McKinney, John Davis, Kell Simpson and Jacobe Jones took second with a time of 3:16.45, with Elijah Barnette also bringing home a runner-up finish win the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.37 meters. Ed Carney took third in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:17.93 to round out the podium finishers.

In Friday’s action, Janaya Davis-Gainer broke the women’s 100-meter dash school record with a time of 11.86 in the prelims to punch her ticket to Saturday’s final.

On the women’s side, Sofia Skidmore qualified for her second finals event, running a 2:21.64 to win her heat and finish second in the 800-meter prelims. Comfort Agwu brought home a third-place finish in the discus with a mark of 38.56 meters.

On the men’s side, Brenton Chapple brought home a fourth-place finish in the decathlon with 5,472 points, while Daniel Mejias posted a personal-best 9:58.19 to take fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with Abdul Cisse taking fifth in the discus with a mark of 42.76 meters. Eli Pineda (14.74) qualified for the 110 meter hurdles finals, while Jacobe Jones (48.90) punched his ticket to the 400-meter finals, with Kell Simpson (56.34) qualifiying for the 400-meter hurdles finals.

The top three finishers in each event at the championships are named first, second and third team All-Conference.

All told, the Braves combined to post three school records, one meet record, and 37 personal bests at the event.
