CHESTERFIELD, SC – The Raider boys varsity basketball team closed out tournament play in dramatic fashion, rallying from a large halftime deficit to defeat Hartsville 63-59 and claim the tournament championship.
The Raiders won three straight games over the course of the event, finishing the tournament on a high note and carrying momentum into the new year.
In the championship game, Richmond faced its toughest test. The Raiders trailed Hartsville 43-19 at halftime, struggling to find rhythm offensively while the Red Foxes controlled the tempo through the first two quarters. Despite the deficit, Richmond head coach Donald Pettigrew said panic never entered the locker room.
“Just chip away,” Pettigrew said of his halftime message. “Can’t get it all at once, gotta value possessions.”
That approach paid off in the second half as Richmond gradually flipped the game’s momentum. The Raiders tightened up defensively, leaning into man-to-man coverage that disrupted Hartsville’s offensive flow. At the same time, opportunities that had been missed earlier.
“Playing better man in the second half and started knocking down shots,” Pettigrew said.
Richmond’s defensive pressure led to stops, which turned into transition opportunities on the other end. Possession by possession, the Raiders eased the deficit, showcasing patience and composure well beyond their years.
The comeback effort reflected what Pettigrew identified as the defining characteristic of his team throughout the tournament.
“Toughness,” he said.
That toughness was evident not only in the championship game, but throughout Richmond’s three-game tournament run. The Raiders opened the event with a 75-43 win over Cheraw, setting the tone with defensive intensity and consistent effort. Richmond followed that performance with an 84-42 victory over Anson before advancing to the championship game against Hartsville.
The championship win capped a stretch of disciplined basketball in which Richmond leaned on effort, defensive focus, and belief, even when circumstances were challenging.
Winning the tournament was a significant milestone for the Raiders as the head into the second half of the season. Pettigrew said finishing the event with a championship and a winning streak provides an important boost for his team.
“Going to the new year with a win streak is good for our team morale,” he said.
The championship performance also served as an early-season benchmark, offering a glimpse of what Richmond can accomplish when it plays to its identity. From defensive grit to improved execution down the stretch, the Raiders demonstrated growth over the course of the tournament.
For the Raiders, the tournament title was more than just a trophy; it was a statement about resilience, belief, and the ability to respond under pressure. After falling behind by 24 points in the championship game, the Raiders proved they could stay composed, trust the process, and fight their way back.
As conference play approaches, Richmond will look to build on the confidence gained from its tournament run, carrying forward the toughness and discipline that defined its championship performance.
