ROCKINGHAM – Coming off a championship tournament run, Richmond Senior returned to the court Saturday looking to build on its recent momentum. Instead, the Raiders ran into a tough test at home, falling 71-51 to South Mecklenburg in their first game since the Christmas tournament.
South Mecklenburg set the tone early, creating challenges for Richmond on both ends of the floor. Head coach Donald Pettigrew said his team struggled with on-ball defense, particularly against South Meck’s No. 2 and No. 22.
Despite the setback, the game served as a measuring point for the Raiders as they transition back into regular season play after an emotional and demanding tournament stretch. Pettigrew acknowledged that resetting after a successful tournament run can be a challenge, particularly when it comes to returning to defensive fundamentals and execution.
“Just getting back to what we do defensively and doing the little things offensively as well,” he said.
Richmond showed flashes of energy throughout the game, but struggled to sustain it consistently against South Mecklenburg’s pace and physicality. Pettigrew said energy remains a key point of emphasis for his team as the season progresses.
“Playing with energy,” he said, noting what he wants to continue seeing from his players.
Saturday’s meetup also marked the beginning of an important stretch for the Raiders, with conference play approaching following a 10-day break. Pettigrew took accountability for ensuring his team is better prepared as the stakes rise.
“Me as a coach, I do a better job of getting my team ready to go each night we play,” he said. “Getting in conference play is very important. We can’t let games get away from us and that starts with me as a coach.”
That sense of responsibility reflects a program focused on growth rather than dwelling on results. Pettigrew emphasized that preparation and consistency will be critical as Richmond enters the heart of its schedule.
“Be better prepared and playing good basketball down the stretch,” he said.
The loss came just days after Richmond capped a strong tournament showing, winning three straight games to claim the championship. That run included decisive wins over Cheraw and Anson before a dramatic comeback victory over Hartsville in the final. While Saturday’s outcome didn’t go Richmond’s way, Pettigrew indicated the lessons learned during the tournament still apply.
As the Raiders head into their brief break, the focus shifts to tightening defensive execution, improving offensive efficiency, and maintaining energy from start to finish. With conference play looming each game will carry increased importance, and Pettigrew said it begins with preparation and attention to detail.
While the final score didn’t reflect Richmond’s recent success, the Raiders view the game as part of the larger process of building consistency and resilience over the course of the season. With time to regroup and refocus, Richmond will look to return sharper and more prepared when conference action begins.
