CHARLOTTE – Richmond Senior’s playoff run came to an end Friday night as the Raiders fell 52-18 to a fast-striking Independence squad that rode a wave of explosive plays to advance.
Richmond opened the night looking sharp, moving the ball methodically on its first full drive before Jake Veach put the Raiders on the board with a 27-yard field goal. Early on, the defense held its ground as well, forcing a punt and keeping independence from finding early rhythm.
But little by little, momentum tilted.
Independence answered Richmond’s early lead with a long touchdown run late in the first quarter, the first of several big plays that defined the matchup. A pair of second-quarter scoring drives, along with a defensive touchdown, pushed the Patriots ahead, though Richmond refused to fold. The Raiders pieced together their strongest response just before halftime, converting in the red zone on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Bob Pegues to Jayden Hamilton. Amer Morrison powered in the two-point conversion to tighten the score to 21-11.
Richmond carried that energy into the third quarter with another promising march into Patriot territory. But a fumble near the red zone halted the attempt, and Independence immediately countered with a 71-yard touchdown burst that widened the gap.
From there, the Patriots continued to capitalize on short fields and quick-strike opportunities, adding two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Richmond continued to compete deep into the fourth, adding a final touchdown, but the deficit was too steep to overcome.
Despite the loss, Richmond closes the year at 9-3 and as champions of the inaugural Mid-South 7A/8A Conference. A milestone season underlined by offensive balance, defensive grit, and consistent playmaking across the roster.
The Raiders will now turn their attention to the offseason, carrying with them both the sting of Friday night and the pride of a strong campaign that brought a conference title back to Rockingham.
