ROCKINGHAM – Last weekend’s Civil Wars race at Rockingham Dragway brought fierce competition from locals and guests alike. Friday’s events began with radial testing early in the day and concluded with Pro Mod qualifying and racing. Civil Wars Pro Mod racing draws top competition from across both Carolinas.
Among the Pro Mod racers was Kelly Martin, a second-generation driver who lost his father earlier this year. Martin, who has been visiting racetracks since he was old enough to walk, has competed in both local and national circuits. He previously raced in the American Drag Racing League, traveling to events in states such as Texas and Ohio.
Martin says that in 2010 he stepped back from those leagues to focus on work and on building a new team. He also shared that he wouldn’t go anywhere else because the track owners are phenomenal and take great care of the racers.
Pro Mod drag cars are professionally modified production vehicles designed for extreme horsepower and speed. These machines are known for being unpredictable, showcasing wild burnouts, dramatic launches, and incredible top-end speeds. Martin races a Pro Mod–class 1967 Chevy Camaro powered by a 521-cubic-inch Brad Anderson racing engine equipped with a screw supercharger.
