ROCKINGHAM – Richmond Senior achieved its first win of the season on Friday night defeating rivals Scotland County with a score of 36-21 at Raider Stadium. The game showcased intense competition but ultimately Richmond’s strong defense and timely offensive plays secured the win.
The Raiders (1-1) established a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter and delivered a critical blow just before halftime. Quarterback Evan Hodges connected with Amer Morrison for a 48-yard touchdown. When Scotland attempted to respond through the air, Richmond sophomore Ty Covington intercepted the pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. Hodges added a two-point conversion run ending the half with Richmond in the lead.
Scotland (1-1) attempted to close the gap but encountered resistance from the Raiders defense which held firm during two critical red zone situations. The Scots were hindered from a fourth and goal situation from the five-yard line late in the first half and again on another fourth and goal from the three-yard line early in the third quarter. Richmond then executed a lengthy 97-yard drive culminating in running back Bob Pegue’s second touchdown of the night.
Hodges finished the game with an impressive 11 completions out of 16 attempts totaling 190 passing yards. Running back Chance Crowder contributed with 91 rushing yards and a touchdown. Pegues recorded two rushing touchdowns including an 11-yard option run that confirmed the victory. Scotland’s offense relied heavily on running back Tijurian White who rushed for 68 yards and scored a five-yard touchdown in the game’s closing moments.
Despite both teams accumulating significant penalty yards – Richmond with 248 and Scotland with 100 – the Raiders’ defensive resilience and explosive offensive plays were pivotal in extending their series lead over Scotland 41-16-1.
Looking ahead, Richmond is set to continue its schedule by hosting Rolesville while Scotland will travel to compete against Ashley.
