ROCKINGHAM — Earlier in the season, Allie Goodman wanted her to see her team move up to third in the Southeastern Conference standings.

Richmond Senior had its chance to stake its claim against Scotland Thursday afternoon. After failing behind in singles, Richmond needed to sweep the doubles to pull out a come-from-behind victory.

It came up just short.

Scotland won two of the three doubles contests to post a 6-3 conference win. The Raiders are now 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the SEC. The Scots improve to 7-5 on the season and 6-4 in league play.

Scotland claimed four of the singles matches. Camryn Ellis and Anna Griswold were victorious at No. 1 and No. 2. Ellis downed Kathrin Reister 7-5, 6-3, Griswold stopped Kenzie Ransom 6-4, 6-0. The Scots also earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Cheyanne Strong edged Jayana Nicholson 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 and Grace McIntyre blanked Emily Duckworth 6-0, 6-0.

Richmond picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 6. Destiny Buie defeated Brooke Bathie 6-3, 6-2 and Allie Hammond knocked off Karrington Campbell 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Buie and Nicholson beat McIntyre and Strong 8-4. Ellis and Griswold downed Ransom and Reister 8-3. Liza McIntyre and Bathie defeated Duckworth and Hammond 8-3.

Richmond will return to action and close out its regular season in a make-up match with Lumberton 4 p.m. Monday.

Richmond sweeps Lumberton

LUMBERTON — The Richmond Senior volleyball team stretched its winning streak to a season-high matching three games following its victory Thursday afternoon.

Richmond downed Lumberton 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 in a Southeastern Conference matchup Thursday evening. The Raiders are now 8-9 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. The win also gives Richmond the season sweep over three SEC schools — Hoke, Lumberton and Purnell Swett — and secures a spot in the 4A playoffs.

“We worked hard in practice yesterday correcting some things we had been struggling with and that showed in the game,” Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey said. “We did a great job defensively to cover hits and tips.”

Madelyn Chappell led the way for Richmond with seven kills. Owen Bowers and Hailey Mason both recorded six. Altman Griffin had 12 digs.

Richmond will return to action 6 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Pinecrest. The Patriots swept the previous match with the Raiders on Sept. 22.

Raiders rock Bucks in JV football

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior junior varsity football team stretched its scoreless streak to four games with a 56-0 win over Hoke in a Southeastern Conference clash Thursday night at Raider Stadium.

Dante Miller scored three touchdowns — two rushing and one receiving — to lead the way for Richmond (5-0 overall, 1-0 in the SEC). Kaleb Douglas also accounted for four touchdowns. Douglas threw for two and ran for another two. Samad Anderson returned an interception for a score.

Richmond led 49-0 at halftime and there was a running clock midway through the second quarter.

“I was proud of the guys,” Richmond JV coach Jay Jones said. “I told them coming in that we saw Hoke do a lot of stuff and we weren’t sure what they were going to do.”

The junior varsity team will travel to Pembroke 7 p.m. Oct. 15 to face Purnell Swett.
