ST. PAULS — The Richmond Senior soccer team got back on the winning track Wednesday night.
After losing to Lee County earlier in the week, Richmond rebounded with a 3-1 non-conference victory over St. Pauls. Three players found the back of the net for the Raiders in the win.
“We played a lot better in the second half,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “We outshot them 22-4, but we couldn’t score. We had open shots, but sent them wide, high, but I’ll take it.”
Ryan Watkins netted the go-ahead goal with nearly 8 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Raiders (3-1) a 2-1 lead at the break. Brandon Morse added an insurance goal with 4 minutes left in the contest.
Alex Alvarado opened the scoring for Richmond by converting on a penalty kick 10 minutes into the contest. St. Pauls knotted the game at 1 nearly 7 minutes following Alvarado’s goal.
“It is nice having kids coming off the bench and scoring,” Howard said. “It’s been trial and error. There have been some that have opened my eyes and will get more playing time.”
Richmond is scheduled to return to action 7 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to North Moore. That contest was originally set for Aug. 19 but was pushed back by school officials because of delays in the final preparations for the new soccer field.
