ROCKINGHAM — It was a better week for the Southeastern Conference.

After going 3-3 in the opening week, the SEC went 4-2 in Week 2.

Pinecrest, Richmond Senior and Scotland were all victorious to improve to 2-0 on the season and Lumberton earned its first win. Hoke and Purnell Swett remained winless through two games.

LUMBERTON 34, PINE FOREST 27

FAYETTEVILLE — Troy Mitchell scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 30 seconds left in the game to propel Lumberton to its first victory of the season, downing Pine Forest 34-27.

The Pirates trailed 20-13 going into the final 12 minutes of play. Braylon Grice scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to tie the game. Later in the quarter, Mitchell scored on a 4-yard run to push Lumberton in front.

The Trojans knotted the game when Willis Anthony caught a pass from Julian Hill and went 10 yards for the touchdown with 1:10 remaining. Mitchell responded with the go-ahead score 40 seconds later, finding the end zone from 59 yards out.

“We felt like we left a lot of plays on the field in the first half,” Lumberton coach Mike Setzer told The Robesonian. “We know that it’s a learning process, we were able to come out after halftime and make some adjustments and the kids believe in our adjustments now. I’m really, really, so proud of my kids for pulling this win out.”

SCOTLAND 42, INDEPENDENCE 13

CHARLOTTE — Zamir White received national honors for his performance against South View in Week 1.

It’s hard to see how he isn’t going to earn more after his stat line against Independence.

The sophomore running back ran for nearly 300 yards and six touchdowns to pace Scotland to a 42-13 win over Independence. The majority of those yards came when White received the snap when the Scots were in the “Wildcat” formation.

Scotland raced out to a 28-7 halftime lead and Independence pulled within two scores in the third before White scored his fifth and sixth touchdowns to ice the game.

“We played great tonight, the offensive line was incredible,” Richard Bailey said to the Laurinburg Exchange. “Zamir White was unbelievable. We introduced a new wrinkle, the Wildcat, and they had a hard time with that all night.”

PINECREST 44, RIVERSIDE 0

SOUTHERN PINES — It was a dominating performance from the Pinecrest defense that led the way against Riverside.

The Patriots limited the Pirates to just one first down and fewer than 35 yards of offense in a 44-0 win. Riverside didn’t move the football past its 37-yard line in the contest.

On offense, Pinecrest had more than 250 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground. Christian Ledbetter, Jaren Lubrano and Juwain Roper all had a rushing score for the Patriots. Ledbetter connected with Chris Owens on two touchdown passes in the first half.

“I think it is important for us to keep being a six-headed monster in the running game,” Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger said to The Pilot. “And I thought out drop-back passing game was really good tonight.”

RED SPRINGS 22, PURNELL SWETT 8

RED SPRINGS — It was a historic win for Red Springs over its in-county rival.

Red Springs defeated Purnell Swett 22-8 for its first victory over the 4A school.

Damian Hunt gave the Red Devils the lead for good when he intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown. Red Springs put the contest out of reach when Toddrick Lockhart hooked up with Amire West for a 15-yard scoring pass.

Oxendine accounted for Purnell Swett’s lone score by rushing 17 yards for the game’s initial touchdown. Oxendine left the contest with concussion-like symptoms.

“We moved pretty good in the first half,” Purnell Swett coach Jon Sherman said to The Robesonian. “When our quarterback goes down, it’s tough. He’s our machine.”

JACK BRITT 63, HOKE 6

FAYETTEVILLE — It was all Jack Britt from the beginning as it cruised to a 63-6 win over Hoke.

Jaquel Webster rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries for the Buccaneers. Bryan Bryant threw for 185 yards and four scores. Bryant added another 120 yards on the ground on just three attempts. Keshawn Wynn had four receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Alphonso Williams chipped in with three catches for 65 yards and a score in the win.

Hoke’s only touchdown of the contest came on a 55-yard pass to Jacob Rushing from Kevin Thorpe.
