CAMERON — Richmond Senior volleyball coach Shellie Wimpey was proud of the way her team continued to battle in its match with Union Pines.

The problem was the Raiders had dug themselves too big of a hole to get out of.

“They did a good job of coming back when we were down,” Wimpey said.

The Vikings claimed a 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 victory over the Raiders in a nonconference clash Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Raiders to 0-2 on the young season.

Altman Griffin paced Richmond with nine kills. Owen Bowers recorded five blocks in the loss.

“We need to do a better job of keeping the lead when we get it,” Wimpey said. “We had a six-point lead at one point in the third game and we let them come back. Union Pines is a tough team. They hit it hard and their girls have good jump serves. We played hard and there were times when we looked really good and times where we didn’t.”

The Union Pines junior varsity team swept Richmond in two games.

Richmond will return to action 6 p.m. today when it plays host to Southern Lee. The junior varsity contest is set to begin at 5 p.m.
