Two home runs weren’t enough for the Richmond Senior High School varsity baseball team Friday night, as the Raiders were edged 5-4 on the road at Pinecrest.

Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Raiders trailed 4-3. A couple hits later and senior Tony Gathings hit an RBI to tie the game with just one out, but a 4-6-3 double play got the Patriots out of the inning with a chance to walkoff in the bottom of the inning.

After Pinecrest got runners on first and second, Colby Wallace hit the walkoff RBI double to seal the win.

The Patriots completed the series sweep and dropped the Raiders to 0-4 to start the season.

Juniors Cameron Way and Colin Wheeler both struck home runs, with Wheeler’s being a solo shot and Way’s being a two-run homer. Pinecrest had two home runs of its own.

Way also started the game on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings, while giving up four earned runs off nine hits and striking out seven. Junior Will Dawkins finished out the game giving up one earned run off two hits and striking out three.

Next up for Richmond is a home-away series against Jack Britt on Tuesday and Friday next week.
