Prescence over presents

in

As the holidays approach, it’s easy to get swept up in the rush – shopping lists, decorations, endless streams of sales and “must-haves”. Somewhere between the wrapping paper and the to-do list, the season’s real magic can get buried under the weight of our own expectations.

We tell ourselves it’s about family, gratitude, and togetherness, but how often do we actually stop long enough to feel those things? Too often, we’re distracted. We’re scrolling through gift guides, refreshing tracking numbers, or trying to create a picture-perfect holiday that looks more like a magazine than real life.

But the truth is the best memories rarely come wrapped in shiny paper. They come from being present. From laughter around a messy kitchen table, long talks by the fire, or simply sitting with someone who matters and giving them your full attention.

Our presence is the most meaningful gift we can give, and it costs nothing. It’s a quiet meal with family instead of another trip to the mall. It’s putting the phone down to really listen. It’s slowing down enough to notice the little moments, the smell of cookies baking, the sound of laughter, the glow of lights on a cold evening.

The older I get, the more I realize most people won’t remember what they unwrapped last year. They’ll remember how they felt – loved, seen, valued. And that only happens when we’re truly there, body and mind, not rushing to the next thing.

So this holiday season, maybe the best gift we can give isn’t found in a store. Maybe it’s found in our time, our attention, and our willingness to be fully here. Because when we choose presence over presents, we give something that lasts far beyond the season.
