Benefit softball tourney postponed

ELLERBE — A Saturday softball tournament to benefit the family of Jonathan Griggs has been postponed indefinitely due to weather and field conditions, the event’s organizer said Friday night.

Adrian Leviner said the co-ed benefit softball tourney initially set for 9 a.m. at Parsons Field would not be played Saturday. The grounds were already flooded Friday night and forecasts called for an 80 percent chance of rain Saturday.

The tournament was organized to help Griggs’ family with medical expenses weeks after the 30-year-old Hamlet native was found unconscious behind the wheel of his wrecked car May 30 in Marlboro County, South Carolina.

Griggs was taken to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence with serious injuries that required doctors to amputate one of his legs.

A make-up date for the co-ed softball tourney has not yet been announced. Visit for updates to this developing story.
