DOBBINS HEIGHTS — An evening grease fire was contained to the kitchen of a Rose Street home late Monday.

The fire quickly spread to curtains hanging in a walkway near the stove, according to Hamlet Fire Chief David Knight.

One of the four adult residents of the home told Knight that he tried putting the flames out with a garden hose before the fire department arrived.

Knight said the entire house was smoked up when crews arrived, but the fire itself was contained to the kitchen — near the back of the home — and able to be extinguished quickly. Everyone in the home was able to escape without injuries.

Firefighters had to remove a 4-foot section from the ceiling to make sure the blaze hadn’t spread to the attic, he said. A fan was placed in the front door to pull out the smoke.

The chief added that the power would have to be disconnected from the house and the American Red Cross was being called to assist the family.

While cleaning up from that fire, some firefighters left to respond to a fire alarm activation at a day care center.

Knight said that was a false alarm.
