HAMLET — A 12-week course covering the basics of machining technology will be offered at Richmond Community College on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 25 through Nov. 12.

Students will learn about measuring tools, cutting tools, hand tools and machine tools, as well as how to gauge parts, read a micrometer, operate a lathe and measure using vernier scales.

“This course is designed to introduce beginners to the fundamental principles of machining,” said RCC instructor Clayton Dial. “Students will learn about basic measuring tools and will be exposed to the setup and operations of manual lathes, mills and common operation processes.”

Machinists examine completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, adjusting machine controls as necessary. A trained machinist calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments to perform a multitude of tasks.

Classes will meet from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Forte Building. Cost for the course is $180.
