3 suspects sought in carjacking

ROCKINGHAM — Deputies are looking for three men in connection to a late-night robbery and assault.

A 33-year-old Hamlet man told investigators he was pumping air in the tires of his car at the Shiv’s Corner convenience store on County Home Road when he was approached by three black men. The man said he thought at least one of them had a gun.

The incident happened sometime after 11:10 p.m. Monday night and was reported at 2:42 a.m. Tuesday morning, documents show.

The suspects damaged a white tank top the victim was wearing and took his wallet, a pair of black Nike Shox shoes and his car, a red 2001 Chevy Cavalier. Inside his wallet was his driver’s license and four Superior Cranes certification cards.

Deputies say the man, who was knocked unconscious during the robbery, walked home before calling to report the attack. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for X-rays and CAT scans.

The man’s car was later found abandoned on Wiregrass Road between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.

Deputies say there is no surveillance footage of the incident.

Once caught, the suspects will face charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, motor vehicle theft, misdemeanor larceny and assault inflicting serious injury.

Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 910-895-3232 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.
