ROCKINGHAM — Sheriff Mark Gulledge reports that on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at approximately 1:36am, patrol deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Biltmore Dr. in Rockingham for a traffic violation.
Once deputies spoke with the driver, the driver informed the deputies she did not have her drivers license with her. She provided her information and deputies ran her through N.C. DMV. The drivers license came back as being revoked and she was identified as Jariah Alaysi Kersey, 18, of Rockingham.
While speaking to Kersey and a passenger, deputies could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Kersey told deputies they had “smoked” while sitting in the yard prior to driving.
Deputies had Kersey and the passenger step out and conducted a search of the vehicle, while doing so, they located a 9mm handgun under the front seat.
The firearm was run through NCIC and came back that it had been reported stolen to the Rockingham Police Department.
Kersey was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed gun. Kersey was also issued citations for driving while license revoked and other traffic violations.
The passenger was identified as a juvenile and released to a family member on scene without incident.
Kersey was taken before a Richmond County Magistrate and released on a written promise to appear in court.
