ROCKINGHAM — The field of candidates for the Richmond County Board of Commissioners has broadened immensely this year with the chairman and vice chairman of the board declining to file for reelection.

The filing period closed on Dec. 20 without the names Kenneth Robinette and John Garner among the candidates since 1996. Robinette has been re-elected as chairman every year since 1998 and Garner as vice chairman also every year since 1998.

There are three seats on the board that are open, with the only incumbent being Jimmy Capps, who is running as a Democrat. The other candidates gunning for one of the seats are (D) Michael Legrand, (R) Lee Berry, (R) Jeff Smart, (unaffiliated) T.J. Davenport, (D) Susan Bruce, (D) Kevin Clark, (D) Dewey Brower, (R) Andy Grooms, and (R) Jim Entwistle.

There are three seats on both the Richmond County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education up for reelection 2020. Of the commissioners, Chairman Kenneth Robinette, Vice Chairman John Garner and Jimmy Capps will defend their seats, and on the school board, Mabe, Jerry Ethridge and Ronald Tillman.

There are also three available seats on the Richmond County Board of Education. Incumbents Wiley L. Mabe, Jerry Ethridge and Ronald Tillman have each filed to run for reelection, with David McGuire and Connie Poole challenging.

For North Carolina Senate District 25, it will be Democrat Helen Probst Mills challenging Republican Tom McInnis again. In the race for North Carolina House of Representatives District 66, Scott T. Brewer will defend his appointment to the seat following the departure of Ken Goodman against challenges from Republicans Ben Moss and Joey Davis.

The primary will be held on March 3, 2020 and the general election will be Nov. 3, 2020.
