HAMLET — The Richmond County Ninth-Grade Academy’s student government held a clothing drive this week to benefit students in need throughout the school district.

Student government advisor Brenna Wyatt said the students 147 articles of clothing by the end of the week. Wyatt said the students came up with the idea as a group as a way to fulfill one of the government’s chief functions: serving the Richmond County community.

“One of the roles of student government is to contribute to the community,” Wyatt said in an email. “They had several ideas that were wonderful but settled on the clothing drive because it will benefit other students within the district. They felt good about doing something that will benefit their peers.”

The second-block class with the most donations would receive a pizza party. Wyatt said the students are grateful to receive donations any time, not just during the drive.

The clothes will be distributed to students identified as being in need by counselors with Richmond County Schools.

According to the most recent census data, 24.8 percent of Richmond County residents live in poverty.
