HAMLET – The Richmond County Board of Education met Thursday night to discuss applicants for Richmond County School’s next superintendent.

Chairman Wiley Mabe said they’ve received nine applications from candidates both in-state and out-of-state.

“I’m pleased with the response,” said Mabe.

Thursday’s discussion was held during their closed session and Mabe said there isn’t a date set for when they will make their final decision. But he hopes it will be within the next two months.

The superintendent’s contract term will begin July 1, according to the Richmond County School’s website.

“It’s not a decision to be made lightly,” he said.

Jeff Maples is currently serving as interim superintendent. Mabe said Maples has expressed interest in the position.
