ROCKINGHAM — A man was killed Monday evening after an apparent break-in attempt.
Rico Joke’a Shelton, 26, of Rockingham was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a residence on Richmond Road, according to the Rockingham Police Department.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, though RPD said in a statement that the initial investigation indicates that Shelton entered the residence in order to commit a criminal act.
“Upon entry into the residence Rico Shelton was met by an individual who shot him, which ultimately resulted in his death,” the statement read.
Records with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety show that Shelton has been previously convicted of multiple felony counts of breaking and entering.
He served seven months in prison following April 2010 convictions on two felony counts of possession of stolen goods and one felony count of larceny from a person. Shelton then served nine months in prison after being convicted on two felony counts of breaking and entering in November 2011.
Most recently, Shelton served a total of three years and 11 months following convictions on one felony count each of habitual breaking and entering, breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possessing stolen goods. He was released from this prison term in June 2018.
