ROCKINGHAM — In addition to approving a major land trade at their monthly meeting, the Board of Commissioners approved a bid for a new shell building.

The low bid of $1,348,000 was submitted by Southern Builders who will now construct the 40,000 square foot building with a concrete floor. The contract between Southern Builders and the county is contingent upon a release of funds by the Community Development Block Grant program. Richmond County is requesting $1 million from the N.C. Department of Commerce as part of the program to help fund the construction.

This will be the fifth shell building to be constructed in the Rockingham West Industrial Park and will be used as a home for new businesses moving into the area or for local businesses looking to expand, according to Economic Developer Martie Butler.

County Manager Bryan Land said construction would begin within the next 45 to 60 days and would be completed within seven months.

Other business on the agenda Tuesday was the reappointment of three members of the Richmond County Public Library Board. Carol Linker, Judy Ormsby and Susan DeWitt were all reappointed to the board and will each serve a three-year term ending June 30, 2021.
