Leak Street summer program gears up

ROCKINGHAM — The Leak Street Cultural Center has begun taking applications for its summer program, which will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18-27.

Program activities will include swimming at the Dobbins Heights community pool, skating at the roller rink, and enrichment and fitness activities at the center, at 1004 Leak St. Students in kindergarten to ninth grade may attend.

Cost is $50 per student, which will cover all activities except swimming — a $1 charge will be assessed for each visit to the pool — as well as two meals each day. Families will have to provide transportation to and from the center, but the program will provide rides to activities.

Registration forms are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, at the center. If more than 100 children register, the center will begin a waiting list.

Sponsors at the Leak Street school alumni, and the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina — the latter of which will provide the catered meals.

Leak Street administrator J.C. Watkins said Tuesday that no child would be turned away if a family could not afford the $50 fee.
