ROCKINGHAM — With less than a week to go, two incumbents from Hoffman filed their intent to run for office again at the Richmond County Board of Elections Office.

Mayor Tommy Hart and councilwoman Cynthia Northcutt both filed on Monday, along with Ellerbe’s Corey Brewington, according to elections director Connie Kelly.

Councilman Riccardo Anderson was the first candidate to file for the northeastern Richmond County town on Friday.

Three council members — Althea Sloan Cobb, Daniel Kelly and Rory Kevin Jones — have yet to file.

With Hoffman’s election schedule, all council seats and that of mayor are up for grabs every two years.

The past two elections, there has been at least one Hoffman to candidate not make the filing deadline. In 2015, it was Cobb. Two years before that, the elections director said the final member was decided by write-in.

Brewington was elected four years ago and resigned earlier this year when he moved out of town — but was recently appointed back to his vacant seat when he moved back, Kelly said.

Ellerbe Mayor Lee Berry and councilman Archie Robinson both filed on July 12 and council woman Jean Fletcher filed on Friday, according to Kelly.

The three council members have a challenger in this year’s race, with Fred Cloninger filing on the first day.

So far, the only other contested race in the county is for Hamlet City Council after Stephanie Dixon threw her proverbial hat in the ring July 11. Dixon will be vying for one of two seats, currently held by Eddie Martin and Jesse McQueen. Both Martin and McQueen filed when the period began July 7.

Hamlet Mayor Bill Bayless is also up for re-election, but had no challengers as of Tuesday. Bayless also filed on Friday.

In Rockingham’s race, there are three council seats — one two-year and two four-year — and the mayoral seat on the ballot.

Council members Gene Willard, Anne Edwards and Denise Sullivan filed on opening day, Mayor Steve Morris filed on July 10. So far, there are no challengers in either race.

There are also no challengers in the race for Dobbins Heights council. Council members Angeline David and Tyre Holloway both filed the first day.

The costs to file are as follows:

• Rockingham mayor and city council — $10

• Hamlet mayor — $30

• Hamlet city council — $10

• Ellerbe mayor and town council — $10

• Hoffman mayor and town council — $5

• Dobbins Heights town council — $5

Potential candidates, whether incumbent or challenger, have until noon on Friday file.
