ROCKINGHAM — The sales circulars are out and now, so is the news: Lidl will open its Rockingham store July 20.

Doors will open at 8 a.m., following a ribbon-cutting at 7:40 a.m., according to a statement released Thursday afternoon.

The first 100 customers each will receive a wooden coin representing a chance to win as much as $100 in Lidl gift cards. Each shopper also will receive a reusable bag, while supplies last. Free samples of Lidl products will be available.

Games, activities, prizes and special deals will continue throughout the following weekend.

Lidl (pronounced LEE-dil) is a German grocery store that offers low prices on items stocked on movable pallets. It sells some brand names, but many labels will be unfamiliar to American shoppers. And not everything will be available for every shopping trip — the store rotates its stock as prices change.

The Rockingham store will have only six aisles over 20,000 square feet, featuring a wall of wine selections, a bakery at the store entrance, and sustainably grown and packaged foods. Non-food items such as fitness gear and small appliances also will be available.

Store hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

The store — at 705 US74 Business E. — will be Lidl’s ninth to open in North Carolina this year.

Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries, It opened its U.S. headquarters in 2015 and intends to build as many as 100 stores on the East Coast by next year.
