RICHMOND COUNTY — A man accused of firing at Richmond County deputies in 2023 is back in jail following a failure to appear in court.
According to court records, Douglas Eugene Goodwin, 84, was arrested and booked into the Richmond County Jail on Aug. 10 and is being held under a $500,000 secured bond. He made his first court appearance Aug. 11, and his next court date is scheduled for Sept. 8.
Goodwin faces two counts of assault on a law enforcement or probation officer with a firearm.
Court records show an order for Goodwin’s arrest was issued May 23, 2025, after he failed to appear in court May 19, 2025. Records also show Goodwin failed to appear Aug. 5, 2025.
Goodwin was indicted Sept. 18, 2023, and the case was transferred to Superior Court. A motion to withdraw as counsel was filed April 4, 2025.
The charges stem from a 2023 incident in Roberdel. According to reports from the incident, Goodwin called 911 stating that people were shooting at his residence. Goodwin is accused of firing at deputies who responded to the home.
