ROCKINGHAM — During a retirement celebration on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Dave Davis and Harold Isler were each presented with North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina, the award recognizes individuals whose exemplary service and extraordinary contributions have made a lasting impact on their communities and strengthened the State of North Carolina through service above and beyond the call of duty.

For more than four decades, Dave Davis transformed the City of Rockingham Parks and Recreation Department into a thriving program that has enriched the lives of thousands of youth and families through a wide variety of sports leagues, summer camps, special events, and recreational opportunities. His influence extended beyond Rockingham as a respected high school and collegiate sports official throughout the Southeast. More importantly, Dave has served as a mentor and role model whose commitment to youth development, sportsmanship, and community pride has shaped generations and strengthened the quality of life in Rockingham.

Chief Isler has served as Fire Chief for the City of Rockingham since 2014, becoming the first African American to hold the position in the department’s history. Previously, he served 17 years with the Goldsboro Fire Department. Under his leadership, the Rockingham Fire Department achieved an exceptional Class 2 Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating, a testament to his commitment to excellence in public safety. Chief Isler also played a key role in developing the Executive Fire Officer Program at Richmond Community College, helping educate and mentor future fire service leaders through his extensive knowledge and experience.

The City of Rockingham extends its deepest gratitude to Dave Davis and Harold Isler for their decades of dedicated public service and unwavering commitment to the citizens of Rockingham and the great State of North Carolina. Their leadership, integrity, and countless contributions have left an enduring mark on our community and will continue to inspire future generations.

We congratulate both Dave and Harold on receiving the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a well-deserved recognition of their extraordinary service and lasting impact. As they begin this new chapter, we wish them many years of health, happiness, and fulfillment in retirement. Thank you both for a job exceptionally well done.
