ROCKINGHAM — After a seven-year hiatus, Relay for Life returned to Richmond County on May 1, raising more than $33,000.
Over 700 people attended the event, which raised $33,249.30, according to Heather Guinn, store manager at the Cancer Care Treasure Shop.
Guinn said that the total reflects funds raised through the Relay for Life event. The Treasure Shop will later announce how much it raised separately for the American Cancer Society, as store proceeds go towards it.
“We definitely want to thank everybody who showed up to the event,” Guinn said. “The community, the volunteers, all the food vendors, everybody who made this possible, because without them, this wouldn’t have been possible. We look forward to next year being even bigger.”
Guinn said organizers hope the community will become even more involved next year to reach new milestones.
Guinn continued, “We would like for the community to come together even more so that way we can raise more than $33,000. We would love for the goal to be $100,000. That would be a great number; $33,000 is also a great number for a return since 2019.”
Relay for Life was founded in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington. Klatt spent 24 hours walking and running 83.6 miles around a track while friends and patients paid to join him, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life in Richmond County was previously held in the Cole Auditorium parking lot. This year’s return was held at the track at Raider Stadium at Richmond Senior High School.
