ROCKINGHAM — Members of the General Henry William Harrington Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, installed their annual Patriot Tree on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Thomas Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham.
The display commemorates Flag Day and the approaching Semiquincentennial of the United States. The tree is adorned with ornaments bearing the names of the chapter’s documented Revolutionary War Patriots—individuals who fought for or provided essential service in securing American independence. This tribute to their courage and sacrifice will remain on display through July 4 as part of Richmond County’s recognition of America 250.
Flag Day, observed nationally on June 14, marks the adoption of the United States flag by the Continental Congress in 1777. It is a day dedicated to honoring the principles represented by the Stars and Stripes and reflecting on the generations who have defended them. This year’s observance carries added significance as communities across the nation prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, a commemoration encouraging historical understanding, civic engagement, and renewed appreciation for the American story.
Regent Melissa Wall emphasized the importance of community participation, stating, “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, it is vital that we pause to honor the men and women whose sacrifices secured the freedoms we enjoy today. The Patriot Tree is our chapter’s invitation to the community to remember, reflect, and celebrate the enduring spirit of our nation.”
The General Henry William Harrington Chapter encourages all Richmond County citizens to visit the Thomas Leath Memorial Library to view the Patriot Tree and to join in celebrating Flag Day and the Semiquincentennial by displaying the American flag and participating in local patriotic activities.
