ELLERBE — A structure fire at the Ellerbe Manor Apartments on Second Street in Ellerbe occurred Wednesday evening, resulting in no injuries, officials said. The fire started in a bedroom, causing smoke and water damage.
The Ellerbe Fire Department was assisted by Mountain Creek Fire Department and Northside Fire Department.
According to fire officials and statements taken, the fire is believed to have started from an improperly extinguished cigarette.
Ellerbe Fire Chief Will Barber told the Daily Journal that 17 people were displaced, and the Red Cross is providing assistance. The fire was contained to one unit but extended into the roof, damaging about half of the building. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
